Cosmovox - a Musical Instrument for the iPhone and iPod touch“Cosmovox is a unique and innovative musical instrument for the iPhone and iPod touch.” Nearly a theremin. Nearly.

thedigitalist.net » lifting the veil - will you take a peek?“Tim, or perhaps T.J. (we were at the pudding stage), began talking about the experience of editing Cliffhanger (the edition we were going to print), and about some of the material that had to be changed or cast away - characters’ names, a lesbian sex scene, the ending itself - and we wondered whether, in a born-digital text, these sloughed-off palimpsests acquired an existence of their own, beyond the shadows of an HFS hard drive; in a library run by Veet Voojagig, perhaps.” Picador publish both the final version of the book in print - and the urtext as a separate digital product. Fun.

The Singles Club (preview) - Phonogram“The time comes again. Here’s the first five pages from the first issues of PHONOGRAM: THE SINGLES CLUB. Not only that, but we include seven sample B-side pages, plus a little introduction about what they’re all about, like.” Looking jolly good, and am rather excited by the B-sides.

Dexter Gets His Own NewsstandWonderful pastiches of popular US newstand titles to promote the new season of Dexter. The New Yorker pastiche is particularly superb.

Two new music videos of songs from the latest Collections of Colonies of Bees album Birds just got posted on Stereogum today…make sure to check them out when you have a spare twenty minutes. The video for “Birds II” is by artist Michinori Saigo, and uses dripping pink paint, boxes, and cutout bird images to illustrate the song’s structure, while the video for “Birds III” by Arthur Ircink features extreme closeups of the band and their instruments and investigates “potential vs. kinetic energy” as the band describes it. Whatever the theory behind its execution, I can’t get enough of those shots of Jon Mueller’s cymbals hitting each other. But that’s just me.

Being under deep impression of stoner doom I started digging Southern Lord label bands. This time I’ve got Earth’s “The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull”. This is the same slow rock like Hibernaculum. The music so relaxing and dark, that all my nature reverberates with its low frequency guitars. I think I’m gonna dig more of this stuff, this music is like drugs, you constantly craving for more. Same goes for SUNN O))).
Next CD is by Deutsch Nepal’s “Dystopian Partycollection”. This is a compilation of the various releases of DN that were released on vinyls and cassettes. This is quite valuable release for those who has no turntable but loves Deutsch Nepal, i.e. it’s exactly for me. This is quite nice release featuring alot of tracks with Lina’a cozy vocals and industrial dronings. Get it if you like Deutsch Nepal!
The folks over at Smashing Magazine were kind enough to feature 3 of my wallpapers for their September Calender. Check them out here, and there are about 25 more really awesome wallpapers there. Thanks to Vitaly and Sven!
The Winning Shot.
And this photo of mine won the 2nd place in the August Hyderabad Photography Club (HPC) Contest. The theme was ‘Hyderabad at Night’ and I got 13 stars narrowly beating the 3rd place one which got 12 stars. Thanks to everyone who voted for me.
And Google has announced their new Open Source browser ‘Chrome’ which is supposed to improve stability and security and make it easier for the simple user. Lets how things unravel tomorrow.
I watched ‘Daniel Defoe’ Robinson Crusoe’ today which is admittedly, overall a pretty average movie. What I really liked about the movie though is the way the complex relationship between Robin and Friday is portrayed. Some scenes are very heart rendering, especially the final scene when Robin holds Friday’s dying body in his arms and screams at the top of his voice. Good performance by Pierce Brosnan.
Today is also the first day of fasting of the holy month of Ramzan for Muslims. And with Ramzan comes the Hyderabadi Delicacy, Haleem which I happily gorged on.
And come nightfall, I spotted some beautiful stars in the clear sky tonight and hI eaded to the terrace with my trusty tripod. I got some decent shots of the stars and then I attempted to take some Star Trails. Note the word attempted because I hardly got anything worthwhile. I knew it was possible since I got a few potential shots but my China made remote had to mess around at that time thus making me annoyed and also lost the opportunity to capture more the shots. Maybe next time…

This post has nothing to do with Gone With the Wind or the South’s shameful history of chattel slavery. Instead, it’s your chance to sink your ears into “one of the most sublime transitions Phish has ever pulled off,” the set-opening Story of the Ghost > Slave to the Traffic Light from Atlanta’s Lakewood Amphitheater, July 4, 1999. Go on, click it. You won’t regret it. Trust me. I was there.

Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro just released this soundboard recording during his latest “From the Archives” broadcast, which I highly recommend downloading in its entirety - every track is a gem. It also made me dig through my own archives for some of the earliest digital photos in my collection. One point three megapixels!

Apple does it again. I could easily dive into how Apple is leader in innovation, but I would like to focus on a different aspect of Apples skill set. Watch this commercial and then I’ll get to the soul of my post.

There were times this past week after watching this commercial that I found myself unconsciously dropping a “la la la” here and there. What a catchy tune. This got me to track down Israeli pop star Yael Naim’s ‘New Soul’ and to plop down a buck over at my itunes account. As James Sullivan points out at spinner.com
And she’s the latest example of how quickly selling out went from being an unforgivable indiscretion to an admirable career move, the savvy underwriting of your still-righteous indie career. In ‘New Soul,’ the singer blithely finds herself “making every possible mistake.” Latching onto Apple’s latest product roll-out won’t be one of them.
