I hаd forgotten thаt MySpace wаs launching thеir own muѕic ѕite. Tonight аt 9 p.m. ΡST іs thе tіme thаt іt іs launching according to ReadWriteWeb. Ιt ѕeems аs though thеy wіll hаve аll four mаjor record labels supporting thеir ѕite. Τhis іs grеat nеws, but probably not ѕo grеat nеws for a ѕite lіke Ιmeem. I currently hаve bеen uѕing Ιmeem to fіnd ѕongs thаt I hеar on thе internet or rаdio, аnd іt hаs bеen a grеat wаy to ѕhare ѕongs wіth friends. However, now thаt MySpace іs saying thаt thеy wіll hаve streaming muѕic from аll four labels, I wіll probably bе uѕing іt for finding muѕic. I guеss I’ll ѕee onϲe іt launches. Τhey’ll аlso hаve a wаy to purchase DRΜ frеe ѕongs, аnd wаys to create playlists. I personally ϲan’t wаit to ѕee whаt іt’s lіke. Hopefully іt wіll bе аs good аs іt sounds.

  1. Fring now on the iPhone Says:

Fring has developed an app available through the app store that is now available for the iPhone.  It’s a great app that lets you use messaging clients like AIM, Google Talk, and even Skype for VoIP.  Another feature that I noticed was that it can also access your Twitter account.  I’ve tried out the AIM and Google Talk features, and they seem to work great.  I know some people are loving the idea of having Skype on their iPhone, although I’m probably not going to have any use for it.  However, people not wanting to use their minutes could easily make calls over their Wifi connection to another person using Skype for free.

I wish that the icon on the desktop would have a ‘badge’ that would show you the number of unread messages.  When I use the Backgrounder app that I recently talked about, I could feel my iPhone vibrate when I had a new message, but it wouldn’t show any indicator as to how many unread messages I had.  It’s worth a download, especially if you use Skype and is available in the app store.  However, I think I’m going to stick with Palringo for now.

  2. Run iPhone Apps in the Background with Backgrounder Says:

For jailbroken iPhone’s only: I was just looking on my iPhone in Cydia to see what new updates and apps had been released today, and I noticed a new app called Backgrounder.  It instantly grabbed my attention, and I had to try it out.  I’ve always wanted a way to run my instant messenger, Palringo, in the background so I could receive notifications of when I had a new IM message.  Also, I know there are many people who would love to have a way to run Pandora in the background.  Well, this works for both, and will most likely work with any app that is found in the app store.

To get it to work, all you have to do is open the app that you want to run in the background and then hold down the home button until a message pops up stating that backgrounding is enabled.  You do the same thing to disable backgrounding.  It even supports running multiple apps in the background, which I haven’t tried yet.  It works great for me with Palringo.  I have yet to try Pandora.

As you may have guessed, this is a great way to get free text messaging on your iPhone.  Sending text messages through AIM is easy, and doing a quick Google search will show you how to do it.  If you would like more information on Backgrounder before downloading it, visit Backgrounder’s documentation page on Google Code.  This is definitely another must have app for a jailbroken iPhone, and definitely a top reason to jailbreak if you haven’t done so yet.

  3. What’s on my Jailbroken iPhone? Says:

As you may have seen from my Twitter account, I jailbroke my iPhone on Sunday.  I had talked in the past about really seeing no reason for jailbreaking an iPhone, but I got bored over the weekend, so I decided to jailbreak my iPhone.  I thought I’d write this post to show some people just what you can do on a jailbroken iPhone, and also to maybe give some people some idea of where to start after jailbreaking an iPhone for the first time.

    Winterboard

This is definitely a must have if you want to customize your iPhone.  There are a bunch of Themes available on both Cydia and Installer.  The theme that I currently have enabled on my iPhone is the Steroe’s Leopard theme, which gives your phone a nice Mac style look.

    dTunes

dTunes is nice for downloading music and video straight to your iPhone.  However, the music and video that you download will not be available to your iPod app, you have to use the dTunes app to play any music and video that you download.

    Make it Mine

This is a little app that allows you to easily change the carrier logo to something that you specify.  It’s a small change, but I think it’s a nice custimization feature.  I currently have my carrier logo set to my name.

    Boss Prefs

This app allows you to quickly change some settings on your iPhone.  You can easily switch 3G, Edge, Wifi, Bluetooth, SSH, and Gmail on or off.  There’s also a nice feature included with this app that I like to have enabled, and that’s the Numeric Battery.  Instead of having the normal battery indicator in the top right of the iPhone, you can set it to a numeric indicator.  It gives a little better insight as to how much battery life you have left.

    NemusSync

This is a great app that has a feature that I wish was included with the iPhone.  It allows you to easily sync your calendar with Google Calendar.  It’s fairly easy to setup, except for the fact that it doesn’t seem to upload current calendars on your iPhone.

Some other random things I have installed are Cycorder, Five Icon Dock, MxTube, QuickGold, and StatusNotifier.  There are other apps that are installed, but I really don’t use them and will probably uninstall them.  There are plenty of other useful apps for a jailbroken iPhone that I haven’t used yet so I’m sure you’ll find something that I haven’t listed here.

Are there any apps for a jailbroken iPhone that you use that you think should be listed here?

  4. Sync an iPhone with another iTunes Says:

Yesterday I plugged my iPhone into my laptop expecting to be able to transfer some songs to my iPhone, but instead it kept telling me that in order to sync my iPhone with my laptop that it would need to erase all of my data currently on my iPhone.  I still wanted to keep my current music and videos on my iPhone, but I just wanted to manually add some more songs using my laptop since my desktop wasn’t booted into Windows at the time.

    The Solution

There is a somewhat easy solution to this problem, but it deals with editing some iTunes files.  You can find the solution here, but I just want to say that if you are using Windows then you will need to find a good Hex editor.  UltraEdit is the one that worked for me.  I tried another one before UltraEdit and it didn’t work.

After going through the steps involved in modifying iTunes, I was able to easily sync my iPhone with my laptop.  My old music and videos stayed on my iPhone, and I was able to easily transfer new music without loosing anything in the process.  Also, I just wanted to note that the tutorial is written for iTunes 7, but it worked for me on iTunes 8.

  5. Use Synergy to Control Two Computers Says:

    What is Synergy?

If you have two computers in the same area, but only use one at a time, you could be using both with Synergy.  I myself have my desktop and a laptop that usually just sits around.  My laptop runs Windows XP and my desktop runs Ubuntu.  I first went out looking for a way to maybe make my laptop into a secondary screen for my desktop, but that doesn’t seem possible.  Instead, I found Synergy, which allows me to control both my desktop and laptop with one keyboard and one mouse.

    Cross Platform

What’s really nice is that it works cross platform, meaning that you can use Windows on one computer and Linux on another.  That means that I can use my laptop to sync my iPhone while using my desktop for mostly everything else.  The Synergy website has some good instructions on getting it setup between computers.  You may run into some problems, but they shouldn’t be too hard to solve by googling them.  I ran into a problem of Windows not recognizing the hostname of my desktop.  Instead I had to use the IP address of my desktop.

    Conclusion

I’m really loving how I can use both of my computers at the same time.  That way I don’t just have my laptop sitting on my desk doing nothing.  It’s definitely worth a shot if you have the extra computer and time to get it set up.

  6. Bejeweled for World of Warcraft Released Says:

Today PopCap Games released the Wow version of Bejeweled.  It’s a free download, and installs just like any addon.  I think it’s quite impressive.  I used it a little today when I logged on Wow and it works great.  You can open up the Bejeweled window to play a game anytime.  It also opens up automatically when you are flying somewhere.  What’s nice is that it counts down while you are flying and acts as if it’s a timed game.  When you are just playing a normal game without flying, there is no timer.  I have yet to look through all of the other options and features, but there seem to be plenty of them.  It seems as though you can see the scores of friends and guild members too, although I have yet to test this out.  Give it a try if you play Wow.

  7. Ordered My First Trackball Mouse Says:

After reading a post over at Lifehacker about “The Best Mouse You’ve Ever Had” I decided to go ahead and order the Logitech Trackman.  I ordered the wired version since I never really have a need for anything wireless.  It wasn’t a spur of the moment decision either.  I’ve been thinking about buying one for a little while now, but I just couldn’t decide on the model or even if it was worth buying.  Thanks to the article though, it seems as though a trackball mouse is very nice to use.  I’ve also read numerous articles and forum posts on the web that say that a trackball mouse is great for gaming.

I know it’s going to take a little while to get used to it, but with all of the time I spend on my computer I’m sure I’ll get used to it fast.  I can’t wait till it arrives.  Do you have a trackball mouse?  If so, how do you like it?

  8. MySpace Music Launching Tonight Says:

I had forgotten that MySpace was launching their own music site.  Tonight at 9 p.m. PST is the time that it is launching according to ReadWriteWeb.  It seems as though they will have all four major record labels supporting their site.  This is great news, but probably not so great news for a site like Imeem.  I currently have been using Imeem to find songs that I hear on the internet or radio, and it has been a great way to share songs with friends.  However, now that MySpace is saying that they will have streaming music from all four labels, I will probably be using it for finding music.  I guess I’ll see once it launches.  They’ll also have a way to purchase DRM free songs, and ways to create playlists.  I personally can’t wait to see what it’s like.  Hopefully it will be as good as it sounds.

  9. Apptism - iPhone App Aggregator Says:

A while back, I wrote about the Digg like iPhone app website, and now I’ve found a site that I may like better.  Apptism aggregates information regarding iPhone apps that you’ll find in the appstore.  This is helpful for when you want to see some reviews or news articles on an app before downloading it.  It’s also a nice website to just find some new apps that you’ve never seen before.

From the main page, you can sort the results by Free, Paid, Category, Price, and Activity.  This gives a very nice way to find a particular app that you may be looking for.  Clicking on the News tab at the top will open the “Latest iPhone App News” page, which shows all of the iPhone app news articles that have been lately aggregated.  The Reviews tab does the same, but instead shows you reviews.

One other nice feature that I like is the box over on the right side that contains the top apps.  You can have it show you all of the popular apps, top free apps, or top paid apps.

I’m still not sure what the number in the top left corner of the icons represents.  If somebody knows, let me know.

This is definitely a great site to get some information regarding iPhone apps.  Definitely worth a bookmark.  I’m sure there will be improvments as time goes on since it is just in beta.

  10. xVideoServiceThief - Cross Platform Video Downloader Says:

I don’t download a lot of videos, mainly because of my limited monthly bandwidth usage, but I do occasionally find a video that I wouldn’t mind downloading.  Now, the problem is that most video sites don’t let you download their videos.  This can be solved with many video downloaders out there, but the one that I want to look at particularly is xVideoServiceThief.

xVideoServiceThief is cross platform, so that means that it will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux.  That’s definitely a plus, since I’ve been on Ubuntu lately.  The interface is easy to use, and adding a video to the download list is as easy as copying and pasting the URL address.  A very nice feature is that you can download multiple videos at one time.  The number of simultaneous downloads can be altered in the options dialog.  You could also pause downloads for supported sites, but not all sites are supported.

A feature that I really like is that you can choose to have your videos converted right after they are downloaded.  When starting xVideoServiceThief, it seems like it is automatically set to AVI.  You can change this in the options dialog to another format if you would like.

Another nice feature that I just noticed is that you can enable the drag and drop window by clicking a little icon in the top right hand side of the screen.  This allows you to easily drag video links from the internet to xVideoServiceThief.

It’s definitely a great tool to install for when you need to quickly download some web videos.  Have any other video downloading tools that you like to use?

    Via MakeUseOf.
